Genesis 2:15 says, “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.”
2 Timothy 1:6 says, “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”
It’s clear in these verses that Christians are to be hard workers and good stewards of all God has given us. With these thoughts in mind, how is one to steward or manage the skills God has given him or her?
A skill is a gift or talent, given by God either spiritually or through natural opportunities, that can be used to promote the gospel. Before I was saved I was a businessman, and then Jesus saved my life as I lay on my deathbed!
Upon my miraculous recovery, I sensed the call into ministry. What I found in the early years—and even now—is that my business acumen has helped me establish my ministry.
My skills transferred with me from the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of light! Your skills are transferrable, too!
Here are 3 ways to steward the gifts God has placed within you:
1. Become a giver
This extends beyond tithing, so allow your mind to be stretched. Don’t be stingy with your skills! Find ways to use your skills to be a blessing.
2. Become a lifelong learner
Your education doesn’t stop with high school and college. Read books, attend seminars, and stay current within your field. There’s no reason Christians shouldn’t be among the top ranking within their profession!
3. Become a teacher
As businesspeople, you have daily opportunities to share the gospel. Think of the number of employees under you. It is your job to train and equip them in business, but sharing your knowledge over a common skill is a great way to forge relationships and point others to Christ!
